penguins are cute

Really good group today. Once again we moderated ourselves, and since we had 2 new members, the meeting turned into a free-for-all discussion of various birth experiences. It's amazing how, even in the Original Six, we run the gamut between Shelly (who had very intense labour for a total of 4 hours) and Danielle (who laboured for 20 hours before she had an epidural, and after that a C-section). So we always have lots to talk about.

(One person mentioned that his wife's water showered Hectate during the birth and she didn't even flinch. He said that she just casually asked the other midwife for a towel when she had a chance & went on doing what she was doing. Amazing woman!)

We had 2 dads out this week; one was the primary caregiver and the other was there with his wife (who is a regular). It was kind of funny that they were next to one another, as one dad is taking 3 months off work and the other dad is "responsible for the cats & rabbits instead of the baby." Oh well. However they want to make it work. I just know that the Boy & myself are each giving 100% and we feel like we're just scraping by – I can't imagine trying to do it with less. Although maybe it's not less, just different.

Next week I'll be swapping my big ball-busting feminist childbirth manifesto Of Woman Born for a couple of issues of "Mothering" magazine. I'm doing the trade with Stephanie, who feels ready to tackle something obsessive & intellectual. I like how Stephanie is gradually moving toward harder and harder tasks. A few weeks ago she made the switch to cloth diapers and is totally loving it. I found out today that she & Tasso run Linux on their computer, so it makes sense that she'd enjoy the switch to open-source diapers (as it were).
